Mallika Mathur

ABOUT

Mallika Mathur is a contemporary designer, who had this brilliant vision of using traditional textiles for contemporary design. An alumni of Welham Girls High School and Lady Shriram College she had the opportunity to pursue varied interests in her formative years. Her modelling career was a life altering experience as it culminated into a stunning design career. Having worked with the best designers in the industry, she travelled extensively all over the world which gave her exposure to indigenous cultures and experiences which are seen translated in her creations. Thereafter she gained traditional knowledge of textiles, witnessing in person the hinterland of the Eastern U.P. belt culminating in Banaras, as a research author of The Saris of India book, a series which was the brainchild of Martand Singh, compiled and edited by Rita Kapur Chishti. The detailed documentation of material, weaves and design motifs, terminology and customs makes this series invaluable. These journeys brandished her style incorporating the multifaceted Indian weaver’s blend of classic and contemporary in her timeless collection.

Having won several UNESCO Seal of Excellence awards for revival of textiles her designs and silhouettes stand out because of ancient patterns inspired from textile museums all over the world. Mallika Mathur, the eponymous label offers bespoke and affordable luxury in both clothing for men and women, and the home. As a child, she revealed an intense interest in the natural world having spent her early years in the lush plantations of Assam. And living the uncommon elan is her Banaras Bloom Collection. These sought after heirlooms are a wearable art form created from upcycled brocade evolving over the years as something uniquely yours. Every minute, everyday, somewhere in the world a woman finds herself drawn to her creations.
